Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Refugee Status Applications.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

73 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice the number of applications for refugee status which are currently under consideration; if he will outline, (1) the nationalities of these applicants, (2) where these applicants are currently living and (3) the length of time he envisages the consideration of each application will take.

There are at present 20 applications for refugee status at various stages of consideration.

It would not be appropriate for me to give personal details about applicants for refugee status in case it could be detrimental to the applicants or their families at home.

The time taken to process an application varies considerably, depending on the extent to which inquiries need to be made through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Department of Foreign Affairs and other agencies.
