Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mobile Health Units.

Ivor Callely

Question:

121 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself with the manner in which mobile health units travel the country advertising complete health checks to the general public; whether (a) these units operate under licence, (b) the units are inspected by his Department and (c) there is qualified medical personnel carrying out the health checks; if he will outline the accuracy of these health checks taking into account all the relevant circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, provides that it is an offence for unqualified persons to purport to act as registered medical practitioners.

I have no knowledge of any complaints of unqualified persons acting in this manner.

I am aware that mobile clinics are in operation around the country and at present there is no requirement for them to be licenced.

As a matter of general principle however, I would advise any person who has concerns about his or her health to see their general practitioner in the first instance, who will be best placed to advise on the appropriate course of action.
