Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Housing Space Statistics.

John Bruton

Question:

252 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the housing space per head in Ireland and in each other EC country; and if he has satisfied himself with the level of utilisation of the housing stock in Ireland at the present time.

Comparative information on the housing space per head of population in Ireland and in other EC countries is not available in my Department. However, the following table gives the latest information available on the number of dwellings per 1,000 population in each EC country. While this suggests a comparatively high rate of utilisation of housing space in Ireland, factors such as our larger than average house and household size must also be taken into account. Specific research has not been carried out into the incidence of, or the factors influencing, under-utilisation of the housing stock in this country.
