Vol. 418 No. 8

Written Answers. - Company Closure.

Austin Deasy

Question:

12 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the statements recently made by the chairman of a company (details supplied) to the effect that the company may cease manufacturing operations in Ireland; and if he will outline the action he is taking to prevent this eventuality.

As the Deputy will be aware this company has suffered considerable losses in recent years and is making every effort to cope with the recession in its two main markets — the United States and the UK. A return to profitability is vitally necessary for the future viability of the firm.

I understand that the company is currently preparing a development plan for the next five years with the aim of bringing them successfully through the current difficult period and preserving the maximum possible number of jobs. I understand that this plan is expected to be completed in the coming months. It would, of course, be a major tragedy if the company were to cease manufacturing in Ireland.

I have asked the IDA to continue to monitor closely the situation and to keep in touch with the company in the matter.
