Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Landfill Site Application.

Seán Ryan

Question:

79 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for the Marine if a request for a licence has been received from Dublin County Council to further extend Baleally landfill site into Rogerstown Estuary; when a decision regarding the application for Baleally dump will be made; and whether a public inquiry or an environmental impact assessment will have to be carried out before a decision is given in view of the wildlife importance of this site.

A formal application under the Foreshore Act, 1933 for an extension to the Baleally landfill site has not to date been made to my Department. Dublin County Council has, however, had preliminary discussions in the matter with my officials and has indicated in this regard that various environmental and scientific studies are being completed at present.

Any formal licence application from the County Council will be assessed in accordance with normal procedures under the Foreshore Act. All parties concerned will be given the opportunity to express their views. Any studies or assessments which may be needed to ensure that the impact of any proposals can be fully evaluated will be sought before a final decision is made.
