Vol. 419 No. 2

Written Answers. - Olympics Grant Application.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

57 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cavan was excluded from the list of athletes grant-aided from national lottery funds for the Olympics; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this person is currently Irish and world champion in his class and is selected for the Olympics, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An application for grant-aid under the outstanding sportspersons scheme was received on behalf of the person in question. However the panel of assessors which advises on the allocation of such grants did not include this applicant on its list of recommendations.

I am satisfied that the panel carried out a full and extensive assessment of all applications. The sport in which the person in question participates is not an Olympic sport.
