Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) Hospital.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

210 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health if he will outline his plans for the development of general medical and surgical services at Naas Hospital, County Kildare, with particular reference to (a) the catchment area to be served and (b) the projected financial requirement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The development plan for Naas Hospital provides for a 209 bed hospital, with a range of services including general medicine, general surgery, intensive care, coronary care and psychiatric and geriatric units.

The developed hospital will have as its catchment area much of County Kildare and a portion of West County Wicklow, with a projected catchment population of 100,000 people.

The projected financial requirement for the outstanding building work at the hospital amounts to approximately £30 million. While the capital allocation available to my Department for 1992 does not allow for the recommencement of this project in the current year, I will be considering the further development of the hospital in the context of the capital resources available to my Department in future years.
