Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Medical Techniques.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

213 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if, having regard to the rapid changes in medical techniques, he will outline his views on the necessity for further education to facilitate surgeons and medical consultants to keep abreast of new techniques in the medical world including both orthodox and alternative procedures.

I am aware of the importance and benefits that accrue from the continuing medical education of all consultants. This has been recognised under the terms of the revised contract for hospital consultants. Under the terms of this contract, a special ear-marked fund of £500,000 per annum is allocated for this purpose. This amount is in addition to the sums already available for the continuing medical education of consultants.

I am satisfied that these measures are adequate to ensure that consultants keep abreast of the advances in medical technology.
