Vol. 419 No. 7
41 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers appointed in Cork City in each of the last four years; and the way in which this compares with the number appointed in the previous four years.
In the case of national schools, the information requested by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Report.
The Deputy will appreciate that the number of new remedial posts allocated to a particular area in any given period will be affected by the extent to which the needs of the area have already been addressed in earlier allocations of such posts.
In the case of Cork City, I would point out that 85 per cent of the city's national schools now enjoy a remedial teaching service and that this level of service is substantially above the national average.
With regard to post-primary schools, it is open to school authorities to appoint remedial teachers within quota. However, the records of my Department do not reveal the number of such appointments made at post-primary level in Cork City during the years mentioned.
