Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teaching of Russian.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

44 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Education if, in view of recent political and economic developments in Russia, and taking into account Russian progress towards a market economy with particular regard to the very strong Russian presence at Shannon Airport, he will now consider introducing Russian as a secondary school pilot project subject in a limited number of schools in Clare and Limerick.

A draft syllabus in Russian as a Leaving Certificate subject has been drawn up by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. The practical implications of implementing it are under consideration in my Department having regard to the number of subjects already on the approved curricular for post-primary schools. In this context, the idea of a pilot project, in the areas mentioned by the Deputy or elsewhere, may well come into consideration.
