Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Staff Embargo.

Dick Spring

Question:

47 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education when he will lift the embargo on the replacement of ancillary staff in special schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

By ancillary staff, I take it the Deputy is referring to child care assistants, caretakers and secretaries.

The position in relation to child care assistants is as I outlined in my reply to Question No. 101 on 25 March, 1992 as follows: The question of child care assistant support is one of the issues being addressed by the Special Committee established to examine the educational provision for children with special needs.
I can assure the Deputy that I will consider the position regarding child care assistance sympathetically when I receive the report of the Special Committee.
The needs of special schools in relation to other ancillary staff are being examined in my Department.
