Written Answers. - Registration Council for Secondary Teachers.

Question:

111 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if, in relation to the Registration Council for Secondary Teachers, he will outline (a) the way in which the council is funded and the amounts of its funding over each of the past five years, (b) the current registration fee, (c) the interests which are represented on the council and (d) whether similar councils for other categories of teachers are planned.

The Registration Council is funded by registration fees, assessment fees, dividends and redemption of stock. Income over the past five years was: 1987 — £8,617; 1988 — £7,004; 1989 — £8,905.61; 1990 — £10,989.32; and 1991 — £12,935.82. The current registration fee is £10.

The interests represented on the Council are Universities, School Management, Teachers Unions and the Department of Education.

A Working Party has been established to consider the question of establishing a Teachers Council for all teachers. Its deliberations have been adjourned pending receipt of legal advice on certain matters relating to the setting up of such a Council.
