Vol. 419 No. 9

Written Answers. - Grant Assistance for Scholorship Student.

Tony Gregory

Question:

94 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if his Department has any grant assistance available to supplement a football scholarship won by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 at Elizabeth Town College, Pennsylvania, USA, who cannot meet the remaining living expenses and whose parent's income is a widow's pension.

My Department operates a Scheme of Grants to Outstanding Sportspersons. It is open to individual sportspersons to apply for assistance under this Scheme. Grants are awarded based on the recommendations of the National Governing Body of the Sport followed by an assessment of each application by a Selection Committee which makes recommendations on the individual to be grant aided and the amount of grant to be awarded.

Allocations under the 1992 Scheme have been made. An application was not received on behalf of the person in question.
