Vol. 419 No. 10

Written Answers. - MMDS Services.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

25 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the up-to-date position regarding the provision of MMDS throughout the country and with particular reference to the situation in County Donegal.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 2 of 2 April 1992 for the general position on the provision of MMDS services throughout the country. Vol. 418 No. 2 — Columns 417 to 419 of the Official Report for that day refer.

The position with reference to County Donegal is that the franchisee for Counties Sligo and Donegal has recently commenced transmissions in the Sligo cell. Coverage of Donegal from the Sligo site is confined to small pockets to the north of Donegal Bay. The franchisee is currently examining suitable transmitter sites to cover the Inishowen/Letterkenny area and it is expected that service in this area will be available towards the end of this year.
