Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Traffic Warning Signals.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

153 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to sanction the erection of flashing lights at schools situated on national primary and national secondary roads; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The use of a traffic warning sign with flashing lights indicating the presence of a school was authorised by circular issued to local authorities by my Department in June 1991. This authorisation is qualified to the extent that the sign may be provided only where an adult or junior school warden service operates, or where a local authority is satisfied, following consultation with the Garda that safety factors including prevailing traffic conditions deem it necessary. The decision to erect a sign in any specific location is a matter for the local authority, acting with the consent of the Garda Commissioner.
