Vol. 420 No. 7

Written Answers. - Maynooth (County Kildare) Post-Primary School.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

64 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if he has received, from Kildare vocational education committee and/or the authorities at Maynooth's post-primary school, County Kildare, a submission requesting the provision of extra classroom space to meet the school's requirements; if he has studied the submission, including a proposal by the parents to provide £40,000 towards the cost of the works concerned; if it will be possible to favourably consider these proposals from the non-capital budget before the end of the current year; if his attention has been drawn to the request for the provision of semi-permanent buildings which could be provided without interference with the capital budget and the urgency to respond favourably to this request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has received applications in respect of Maynooth vocational school for the provision of temporary accommodation to meet requirements next September and the provision of additional permanent accommodation for long term use. I have noted also the proposal by the parents of pupils attending the school to put £40,000 towards the cost of providing extra accommodation.

The need for the additional accommodation is being considered by my Department in the context of the short and long term enrolments of the school and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible. Any grants by my Department towards the cost of providing additional accommodation must be met from within its capital allocation.
