Vol. 421 No. 1

Written Answers. - Psychiatric Services.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

51 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health if extra resources will be made available to the Sourthern Health Board to enable them to put into operation the proposed £13 million plan for psychiatric services, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Southern Health Board have recently submitted a development plan for services for persons with mental illness, 1992-1998 to my Department in response to commitments in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress to develop an integrated and community orientated mental health service. I welcome the preparation of such a plan for the development of psychiatric services in the Southern Health Board area.

My Department are currently examining the board's development plan. Funding towards the implementation of the plan will be considered in the context of funds made available under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress for development of the psychiatric services.
