Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Limerick Prison Female Prisoner Statistics.

Tony Gregory

Question:

105 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if, arising out of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 120 on 23 June 1992 he will outline the number of women prisoners housed in Limerick Prison immediately prior to the prisoner referred to being sent there and the number now in the prison.

In September 1986 it was decided, for operational reasons, that the female wing of Limerick Prison should be changed to male occupancy, given the low female prisoner population at that time.

Subsequent to a review of requirements, a decision was taken in 1990 to revert a section of the prison to female occupancy and four prisoners, including the prisoner referred to in Parliamentary Question No. 120 of 23 June 1992 were transferred to Limerick Prison.

Given the nature of prison sentences, the number of female prisoners in Limerick Prison fluctuates; on today's date there are four females accommodated there.
