Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Carnsore Point Designation.

Séamus Cullimore

Question:

60 Mr. Cullimore asked the Minister for Energy if he will designate the proposed nuclear site which was acquired some time ago at Carnsore Point, County Wexford, as a wind generating project to link into the national grid.

As the Deputy is aware the position of successive Governments has been that nuclear power will not be used for the generation of electricity in Ireland. The land acquired by the ESB at Carnsore for a possible nuclear power station is now used for agricultural purposes.

The Minister for Energy is not empowered to designate that site or any other site in the country for wind-farming purposes. The continuing use of the Carnsore site other than for nuclear power station purposes, is a matter for the ESB.
