Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Survey of Wildlife Species.

Austin Deasy

Question:

50 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance if the Wildlife Section of his Department carry out a census of the country's various species of wildlife; and if so, whether there are any significant trends in recent years.

Ireland is host to a huge number of species. Limited resources are targeted on those species which are of most conservation significance including those which are protected under the Wildlife Act, 1976, or for those where Ireland has undertaken obligations by way of International Conventions.

The Wildlife Service has undertaken a number of surveys in past years, either alone, or in partnership with other conservation organisations. There is no general trend apparent for all species of wildlife. Individual species fluctuate in their conservation status over time and space.
If the Deputy can indicate a particular interest in any given species, I will endeavour to obtain any information which he may require.
