Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher/Pupil Ratio.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

519 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers per 1,000 primary school children in each county; and the steps, if any, she will take to improve this ratio.

The following tabular statement sets out the current deployment of remedial teachers per county and the total number of pupils attending primary schools in the counties in question.

The Deputy will appreciate that the great majority of children attending primary school do not require a remedial teaching service and that the actual incidence of need can vary between schools and areas. In this regard, the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996.
I am currently examining the scope for deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs.
The question of remedial teaching posts will form a key element in this consideration.
