Question:

192 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the location of a school (details supplied) in an area of social and economic deprivation and other factors, she will provide a remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 190, 191 and 192 together.

The school in question has been classed as a school serving a designated area of disadvantage and, as such, has an ex-quota concessionary teaching post and receives additional capitation grants.

A limited number of schools serving such areas also have the services of a co-ordinator under the Home/School/ Community/Liaison Scheme. This scheme, which is in its third year, is currently being evaluated with a view to determining its future scope and direction. The case for this and other schools will be considered in the light of the outcome of that evaluation.

I have asked my Department's Inspectorate to investigate the need for a special class in the school and I will advise the Deputy of the outcome of these investigations as soon as possible.

In relation to the school's request for a remedial teacher, I am currently examining the scope for deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs.
The question of remedial teaching posts will form a key element in this consideration. In this connection the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September, 1996.
