Ivor Callely

Question:

168 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to introduce regulations on water conservation; if he has satisfied himself that there are adequate water supplies to meet the increasing demands in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision, management and conservation of drinking water supplies is, in the first instance, a matter for individual local authorities.

Conservation of supplies is a normal feature of the water management strategy of the authorities. This strategy has been made more effective in recent years in the Dublin area through the provision of a modern telemetry system and metering of supplies to individual large water users. The watermain rehabilitation scheme in the Ranelagh area which is currently under construction at a cost of £1.5 million is specifically designed to eliminate leakage and conserve supplies.

My Department continues to liaise with the Dublin authorities on proposals to improve water supply in the region. Construction work has recently been completed on a further stage of the expansion of the Ballymore Eustace treatment works. The planning of the next phase of the expansion programme for these works, which will increase production capacity to 70 million gallons a day, is being finalised.

Work on a further multi-million pound contract has recently commenced on the North City Arterial Watermain to Fairview and Griffith Avenue. This will improve water supplies and pressure for domestic and commercial users in a large area of the north city. The Dublin authorities are also advancing the planning of a number of other schemes, including improvement of the efficiency of the Vartry works and of the Dún Laoghaire distribution system.
