Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Robert Molloy

Question:

37 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application for financial support from the Galway Remedial Education and Resource Group to provide a service to teacher and parents of children with specific learning difficulties; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any application for financial support for the Galway remedial education and resource group. However, a submission on remedial educational needs in the Galway area generally was made to a former Minister for Education by an organisation called the remedial education action group. The primary focus of this submission was on the need for additional remedial teachers. The Government's commitment in this regard is indicated by the provision in the Programme for a Partnership Government for the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996.

As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September, 1993. These posts will be allocated to individual and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

The needs of schools in the Galway area will be considered in this context.
