Question:

182 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí at present attached to the Mallow Road Garda Station, Cork; and if she will give details of the opening hours of this Garda Station.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 177 and 182 together. The Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda manpower to individual stations, inform me that the Superintendent with responsibility for Mallow Road and Watercourse Road stations is based at Mayfield station. The Garda authorities have no plans to alter these arrangements.

The current strength at Mallow Road station is 2 Sergeants and 9 gardaí. The station is open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 2 p.m.-6 p.m., Monday to Saturday. The Garda authorities report that the number of gardaí present at any one time in Mallow Road station would vary according to the policing requirements of the District. However, they inform me that it is their policy to keep the number of members present in the station or indeed in any station in the district to a minimum at all times in order to have as many gardaí as possible available for operational duties.
