Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Long Term Illnesses.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

429 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health if he proposes any change in respect of the restricted list of long term illness recognised by his Department; and the support, if any, he intends to provide for those illnesses not included in the list.

I have no plans for change in respect of the illness included under the long-term illness scheme.

Many persons with long term illnesses are entitled to medical cards which entitles them to free medical care including free prescribed drugs.

Other persons who are certified as having a long term medical condition with continuing requirement for prescribed medication, are eligible under the drug cost subsidisation scheme and their expenditure in any month is limited to £32.
