Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kilbarrack (Dublin) Adult Literacy Scheme.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

491 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the threat to the future of KLEAR Adult Literacy Scheme in Kilbarrack, Dublin 13 arising from the transfer of St. Mary's School which is the present location of the scheme to St. Benedict's buildings, she will take steps to ensure the continuation of this essential educational service.

Richard Bruton

Question:

514 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the threat to the future of KLEAR, the adult literacy scheme in Kilbarrack, Dublin 13; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 491 and 514 together.

I am aware of the situation which has arisen in relation to the facilities used by KLEAR.

KLEAR is a voluntary organisation which provides literacy and other education courses for adults and which is supported by funding from my Department through the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee. Accommodation is currently being made available in a local national school through an arrangement between KLEAR and the school authorities. While my Department supports and encourages such use of school facilities for broader community use, the specific arrangements in any one instance are a matter for the school authorities and those seeking use of the premises. I am confident that KLEAR will be able to make similar alternative arrangements.
