Vol. 428 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Skills Education.

John Bruton

Question:

95 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education her views on the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that all young people should have proper education in relationships, parenting, childcare, homemaking and budgeting; and the action, if any, she proposes to take on the matter.

The existing post-primary school curriculum provides for instruction in relation to family life, the functions of the family, roles and relationships in the family, management of the home, family budgeting and family support services.

In addition, my Department has issued guidelines to post-primary school on the development of Sex/Relationships Education.

The White Paper on Education will contain a number of proposals for strengthening the role of the educational system in equipping students more effectively for life. These proposals will be further considered in the light of the views expressed by the various interested parties, including those of the Second Commission on the Status of Women.
