Vol. 428 No. 3

Written Answers. - Curriculum Subject Selection.

John Bruton

Question:

97 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education her views on the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that her Department should prepare a leaflet for parents on the implications of subjects choice for long term career prospects.

The recommendation referred to in the question is one of several recommendations designed to encourage pupils of both sexes to select subjects, and later careers, which have heretofore been associated with only one sex.

The Programme for a Partnership Government indicates the Government's commitment to providing a comprehensive career guidance counselling service in second-level schools. Funds are being provided in the Estimates of my Department for this purpose in the current year and also for the creation of additional ex-quota guidance teaching in post-primary schools.
