I have noted the recommendation in the Green 2000 advisory group report, which was launched on 26 March, that the sea based salmon farms should be located as far off shore as technically feasible. The report's recommendation is in line with overall policy objectives for the future development of the finfish farming industry and accords with the industry's own preferred operational strategy. Although a relative latecomer to the industry, Ireland has been a technical innovator in this regard. The Irish aquaculture industry pioneered the development of offshore fishfarming technology using larger and more robust high seas cages. The experience has been very positive, with the more demanding operating conditions of offshore sites being more than offset by the better husbandry conditions, higher growth rates and environmental impact. Open water offshore cages now account for the bulk of Irish salmon production.
