Vol. 429 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teacher Correspondence/Outreach Courses.

Avril Doyle

Question:

146 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Education the correspondence or outreach courses for teachers training which are available here or in the UK which are recognised by her Department.

In order to obtain full recognition as a primary school teacher in Ireland applicants must have completed satisfactorily an approved primary teacher training course.

The only primary teacher training courses run in this country which are recognised by my Department are the Bachelor of Education degree courses which are provided in the Colleges of Education for primary teachers; at present these are all three-year full-time courses.

Teachers holding qualifications obtained abroad and wishing to establish whether they would be eligible for recognition are required to submit full particulars of the course completed and of their qualification to my Department.

My Department does not hold a composite list of acceptable courses. Each application is assessed on an individual basis and in the case of applicants from EC countries in accordance with the provisions of Directive 89/48/EEC.
