Vol. 429 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ewe Premium Scheme.

Michael Lowry

Question:

70 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason in order to qualify for the EC ewe premium it is necessary to specify that, cast ewes have to be retained by the applicant for a period of 100 days, even though there is a 100 per cent inspection system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the EC Regulations governing the 1993 ewe premium scheme flockowners are required to keep on their holdings for 100 days all the ewes on which they are claiming premium whether or not these include cast or cull ewes. The Department must, therefore, insist on compliance with this requirement in the terms and conditions governing the 1993 ewe premium scheme regardless of any particular level of inspections.
