Question:

192 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if, in respect of his Department or of his Ministers of State, he will give the names of any persons or agents, other than the established Civil Service, appointed by him to any position within the ambit of his Department since 10 February 1993; if he will give their job descriptions, terms of employment and salary scale; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A number of appointments have been made in my Department since 10 February 1993, details as follows: One temporary personal secretary to the Minister of State, Mr. Liam Hyland, with effect from 4 March 1993 — the appointment which is strictly temporary is due to the absence on sick leave of the full-time personal secretary and is for a maximum period of three months and, in accordance with recent Government guidelines, she has been placed on the third point of the CA scale, i.e. £160.72 per week; one night-watchman appointed at Michael Davitt House in Castlebar to undertake security duties at a fee of £7 per hour with effect from 30 April 1993; one part-time cleaner appointed at Backweston Farm to undertake normal cleaning duties for six hours per week at £4.47 per hour with effect from 15 March 1993; one part-time general operative appointed at FDS office, Clonmel to open and lock up building, general cleaning and upkeep of building and grounds, for 26 hours per week at £115.10 per week with effect from 15 March 1993; one tractor driver appointed at Backweston Farm to undertake ploughing and tractor driving duties, at £182.99 per week with effect from 1 March 1993; 13 veterinary surgeons have been appointed to act as temporary veterinary inspectors on meat inspection duties on a daily fee of £98.07 — these appointments are subject to their completing a two week training course on meat inspection duties to the satisfaction of the Department's veterinary inspectorate. To date only three officers have completed such training.
