Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Prescribing Scheme.

Nora Owen

Question:

295 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health if savings made on the drug prescribing scheme and returned to the GMS GP can be spent at the doctor's total discretion; and wheather this can include a new car.

The agreement reached with the Irish Medical Organisation in November, 1992 commits all parties to the achievement of responsible and cost effective prescribing. An integral feature of the agreement is the operation of an indicative drug budget scheme whereby any savings acheived in GMS prescribing costs will be apportioned between individual practices and the local health boards for general practice development. Any grants paid to general practitioners arising from this scheme will be for developments approved within the practice.
