Vol. 431 No. 1

Written Answers. - Amenity-Recreational Facilities Provision.

Seán Ryan

Question:

43 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will amend the current planning legislation to provide the planning authorities with the discretion to include, as a condition of approval, a contribution towards the provision of amenity/recreational facilities in the immediate area of the permitted development; and his views on the merits of such a proposal.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

81 Ms. O'Donnell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider the possibility of obliging developers to provide recreational buildings and facilities when building housing estates.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 43 and 81 together.

Section 26 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963 already permits the attachment to planning permissions of conditions requiring, inter alia, the provision of open spaces and the carrying out of landscaping works, or condition requiring contributions towards local authority works, including the provision of open space, which have facilitated or will facilitate the proposed development. I intend to consider, in light of the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women as regards provision of recreational facilities, whether any change is necessary in this regard.
