Pat Upton

Question:

64 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance the number of people engaged in conducting the count in each constituency in the 1992 general election; and the cost of this for each constituency.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 63 and 64 together.

The statutory date by which returning officers are expected to account for advances made to conduct the 1992 general election is 26 May 1993. To date only a small number of accounts have been received. My Department hopes to have the bulk of the accounts by the end of June 1993. Perhaps the Deputy would repeat his question later in the year.

Finally, the Deputy may wish to know that to date £3,230,229 has been issued to An Post to cover the actual cost of postal charges for the general election — Referendum on 25 November 1992; and advances of £2,185,988 have been issued to returning officers in respect of that election.
