Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - Provision of New Sports Stadium.

Austin Deasy

Question:

37 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the discussions held with senior officials of the GAA regarding the provision of a new sports stadium; and if any commitment regarding financial assistance was given on behalf of the Government.

The Minister for Finance and the Minister of State at my Department met senior representatives of the GAA on 30 March 1993. The purpose of the meeting, which was requested by the GAA, was to discuss the proposed redevelopment of Croke Park and the question of financial assistance being provided by the Government towards the cost of phase 1 of the projects which involves the replacement of the Cusack Stand.

All aspects of the redevelopment were discussed including the proposed funding arrangements envisaged by the GAA and the timescale involved.

No commitment was made regarding Government funding for the project but the GAA was requested to make a formal submission setting out all aspects of the project so that the application could be fully considered.

A submission has been recieved from the GAA which is now under consideration. I am not in a position at this stage to give any indication as to the funding that might be provided until consideration of the application has been completed.
