Vol. 432 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consultative Group on Adult Education.

Robert Molloy

Question:

102 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that the Consultative Group on Adult Education is not publishing a formal report and instead putting the onus on the relevant constituent bodies to take appropriate action on the issues identified, there will be any ongoing departmental assessment of the progress made by these constituent bodies.

My Department keeps under review on an ongoing basis all aspects of adult education under its remit, including the work of bodies operating under the aegis of the Department who are represented on the consultative group. The consultative group itself, which is chaired by my Department, considers progress reports on issues identified for action. My Department pursues these matters with the various bodies between meetings of the consultative group as appropriate. The Deputy will appreciate that the consultative group was not established for the purposes of issuing a report but to promote action on an ongoing basis in relation to identified issues. The group achieves this through consultation, joint action, working groups and general networking of the individuals and organisations involved. This action is continually supported, stimulated and encouraged by my Department and this is proving generally satisfactory to all concerned, who have the opportunity at all times to voice their opinions.
