Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Recognition of Eritrea.

John Connor

Question:

14 Mr. Connor asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if it is our foreign policy position to offer full diplomatic recognition to Eritrea which has recently voted to sever its union with Ethiopia.

On 25 May 1993, Ireland formally recognised the newly independent state of Eritrea following the results of the referendum there which overwhelmingly endorsed its independence from Ethiopia and this information has been conveyed to the Eritrean authorities. Eritrea has also been recognised by the other members of the European Community. The question of establishing diplomatic relations with Eritrea is not currently under consideration.

I am not aware of any other claims for territorial secession from Ethiopia.
