Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Student Grants.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

162 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will make a statement on the situation whereby a person (details supplied) in County Cavan, who is seeking financial aid, with maintenance, at the Greenmount Agricultural College in County Antrim, is not allowed it because it is an agricultural college; and the reason agricultural colleges in Northern Ireland are not treated the same way as ordinary colleges are for grant purposes.

The question of approval for student grants of courses at agricultural or other colleges outside the jurisdiction is a matter for the Department of Education. I understand that none of the agricultural colleges are currently recognised for the purpose of the third level student support grants scheme. An application from Greenmount Agricultural College for such recognition is under consideration in the Department of Education at present.
