Vol. 433 No. 5

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Jim O'Keeffe — the need to include, in the terms of reference of the Telephone Users Advisory Group, a provision to enable it to investigate and report on the discrimination that exists in that Dublin city, county and adjacent areas are all being classified as one local call area whereas Cork city and county are not similarly classified; (2) Deputy Doyle — the Irish Government's involvement in the consultation process now being offered following the postponed commissioning of Thorp II; (3) Deputy Crawford — when the next tenant purchase scheme will be offered to local authorities; (4) Deputy Hogan — the reason the Government's claims arising from the Edinburgh Summit in December 1992, in respect of the distribution of EC Structural Funds differ from statements by the European Commission; the basis for making those claims and the reason the Government had modified its stance as regards achieving a 13.5 per cent share-out of the funds; (5) Deputy Batt O'Keeffe — the need for action to minimise the violation of private and public rights as a result of the invasion of property by travelling traders in the Cork area; (6) Deputy Harney — the difficulties being experienced by gardaí in dealing with criminal suspects as a result of the directive issued by the Garda Commissioner that cases are to be dealt with by way of summons rather than formal charging in court; and the need to modify this directive in order to enable gardaí to deal more effectively with the crime wave; and (7) Deputy Cox — the current policy of the Government and related matters in connection with the negotiations for the allocation of EC Structural and Cohesion Funds.

The Ceann Comhairle has selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Batt O'Keeffe, Crawford, Jim O'Keeffe and Doyle.
