Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Discovery Panel.

John Connor

Question:

37 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views on the need for a national centre to provide interpretation and information on the vast array of Celtic field archaeology in this country; and his views on whether such a centre should be located at one of the major national archaeological field monument sites such as Rathcroghan Carnfree in County Roscommon.

The Deputy may be aware that the Discovery Panel, which was established in May 1991, has as its primary aim to work by means of archaeological and related research towards a coherent and comprehensive picture of human life on this island from earliest times. Its second aim is to formulate the results in ways which can be communicated both to experts and to the general public. The panel has decided to focus on a core period of the late Bronze Age and Iron Age, or what is called the Celtic period. It would be prudent to await the results of this research before deciding on how information on this important period should be presented.
