Written Answers. - Second Level School Leavers' Statistics.

Question:

114 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of second level school leavers in each of the years 1991 and 1992; the number thereof who were at work, unemployed, in further education or not available for work and emigrated, respectively, one year afterwards.

The data available to my Department relating to school leavers is derived from the annual survey on the economic status of school-leavers, conducted by the Economic and Social Research Institute, ESRI on behalf of my Department. The results of the survey are based on a national sample of approximately 2,000 leavers drawn from the estimated total of 67,000 who leave second-level education annually.

As the survey traces the career paths of leavers approximately one year after they have left school, the relevant data regarding school leavers in the academic year to end June 1992 are not yet available. The results will not be available until the end of this year.

The number of people who left second-level education during the academic year to end June 1991 and their economic status one year later was as follows:

The data available to my Department relating to school leavers is derived from the annual survey on the economic status of school-leavers, conducted by the Economic and Social Research Institute, ESRI on behalf of my Department.
