Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - Killarney (Kerry) National Schools.

John O'Leary

Question:

139 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education if she will provide a special language unit to facilitate children with speech/language disorders in St. Oliver's Primary School, Ballycasheen, Killarney, County Kerry; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The question of providing a special language unit in St. Oliver's Primary School, Ballycasheen, Killarney, County Kerry, is being actively pursued by my Department at present.

The special needs of children attending these units are such as to require an input of both teaching and speech therapy skills. My Department is prepared to make the necessary teaching post available but the availability of a speech therapist is also required in order that the unit will be in a position to deliver the necessary service. I understand that the relevant health authorities are currently making arrangements to secure the necessary speech therapist.

John O'Leary

Question:

140 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed additional room to Loughquittane national school in Killarney, County Kerry, to facilitate the remedial teacher who works in the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter, in view of the urgency of the project.

There is no record of an application from the board of management for additional accommodation at this school. Should such an application be received it will be examined having regard to the accommodation needs of the school.
