Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Reduction of School Year.

Paul McGrath

Question:

200 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the Government decision to introduce an additional bank holiday in May, she will give the proposals, if any, she has to reduce the obligatory 184 primary school days so that primary school teachers can benefit from this holiday.

The May bank holiday, like all other public holidays, will be a free day for schools from 1994 onwards. The Green Paper contained proposals on the length of the school year. As the Deputy is aware, submissions on the Green Paper proposals are being examined at present, and the National Convention to discuss issues arising from the proposals is now taking place.
