Vol. 435 No. 2

Written Answers. - Shanakiel (Cork) Juvenile Centre.

Bernard Allen

Question:

92 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make an allocation to the Southern Health Board to complete a wall dividing the juvenile centre at Shanakiel from the gardens of the residents of Briarscourt Estate, Shanakiel, County Cork.

The question of undertaking additional works at the Group Home in Shanakiel is a matter for the Southern Health Board.

I understand from the health board that there is electronic surveillance on the existing wire fencing around the eastern boundary of the Group Home and that this arrangement has proved to be satisfactory. In any event, the board considers that the construction of a wall at this stage would cause considerable disruption to the running of the home. In these circumstances, I do not propose to make a grant available to the board for this purpose.
