Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Mentally Handicapped and Psychiatric Service.

Michael Creed

Question:

87 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health if he will make adequate capital funding available for the Southern Health Board's seven year plan for the mentally handicapped and psychiatric services.

The plans for the development of the psychiatric services in the Southern Health Board region call for a capital investment of £7.163 million over the period 1992-98 and in the case of the development of services for people with mental handicap, a capital investment of £18.022 million over the same period.

The question of the provision of additional resources in 1994 for the development of both the psychiatric services and services for people with a mental handicap is the subject of discussions with the Minister for Finance in the context of the budgetary arrangements for 1994. Any additional funding which may be provided will be allocated in line with the priority developments identified by the board and in the case of the services for people with mental handicap, the Regional Mental Handicap Co-ordinating Committee and having taken account of whatever guidelines may be issued by my Department. The allocation of capital funding will be directly related to the developments agreed in the region and approved by my Department.
