Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Kildare Remedial Teachers.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

182 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the number of outstanding requests she has received in her Department from County Kildare for the provision of remedial teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department currently has nine requests for the provision of remedial teachers on a shared basis to schools in County Kildare.

I should also point out that two additional remedial posts were allocated to County Kildare at the commencement of the current school year, resulting in a further nine schools receiving the service. As a result of this allocation 91 per cent of pupils in County Kildare now have access to a remedial service.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional remedial teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the schools in County Kildare, will be considered in this context.
