Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Funding for the Arts.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

65 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the amount of the allocation in her Department's youth and sport budget which is given to the arts; and whether she has satisfied herself with this amount.

It is not possible for my Department to quantify the amount of money from the youth and sport budgets which is given to the arts.

The amount of funding allocated to the arts which is identifiable to my Department is £67,050. However, this does not give the full picture by any means.

Many of the youth organisations and special projects for disadvantaged young people which receive grants from the Youth Section of my Department use part of the funding for the arts. In some of the special projects the arts constitute the main element of the programmes.

My Department also provides funds for Vocational Education Committees around the country to assist in the promotion of youth and sport activities at local level. Some of these funds are allocated to various youth arts activities.

My Department is at present considering the final report of the National Youth Arts Committee published last April. Officials from my Department will be meeting with the Arts Council shortly to discuss the various recommendations in the report.
