Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Resource Teachers.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

176 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of resource teachers in County Kerry who are available to help primary schools to integrate children with a disability.

The role of the resource teacher is to act in support of ordinary teaching staff dealing with handicapped children attending ordinary classes.

The resource teacher model is a recent innovation and is used in particular circumstances, as an alternative to the visiting teacher service which is also targeted on supporting handicapped children in ordinary schools.

A total of seven resource teachers are currently in place throughout the country. One such teacher is based in County Kerry and serves ten schools in Cahirciveen area.
